The benefit of altruistic behaviour achieved by the order-up-to policy with unmatched proportional feedback controllers in a two-echelon supply chain " , Abstract We study a two echelon supply chain with first order autoregressive demand and unit replenishment lead-times. Each echelon of the supply chain uses conditional expectation to generate Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE) forecasts. Both echelons use these forecasts inside the " Order-Up-To " policy to generate replenishment orders. We investigate three different scenarios: The first is when each echelon aims to minimize their own local inventory holding and backlog costs. The second scenario is concerned with an altruistic retailer who is willing and able to sacrifice some of his own performance for the benefit of the total supply chain. The retailer does this by smoothing the demand placed on the manufacturer by using a matched proportional controller in the inventory and WIP feedback loops. The third scenario is concerned with an altruistic retailer with two, unmatched, controllers. The matched controller case out-performs the traditional case by 14.1%; the unmatched controller case outperforms the matched controller case by 4.9%. 1 INTRODUCTION There has been a growing interest in supply chains ever since Christopher (1998) argued that it is not individual companies but rather supply chains that compete against each other. Assuming the unit of competition is at the supply chain level creates a number of interesting challenges as actions in one part of the supply chain will have consequences in other parts of supply chain. This could be in a different company, a different industry, or even in another part of the world. Thus there is a need to understand how decisions taken by one member of the supply chain can affect other members of the supply chain. Collaboration in and coordination of, supply chains is therefore an important area of study.

The Benefit of Altruistic Behaviour Achieved by the out Policy with Unmatched Proportional Feedback Gains in a Two- Echelon Supply Chain

We study a two echelon supply chain with AR(1) demand and unit replenishment lead-times. Each echelon of the supply chain uses conditional expectation to generate MMSE forecasts. Both echelons use these forecasts inside the “Order-Up-To” policy to generate replenishment orders. The governing dynamics of supply chains: The impact of altruistic behaviour

This paper analyses an infinite horizon two-echelon supply chain inventory problem and shows that a sequence of the optimum ordering policies does not yield globally optimal solutions for the overall supply chain. First-order autoregressive demand pattern is assumed and each participant adopts the order-up-to (OUT) policy with a minimum mean square error forecasting scheme to generate replenish...

Measuring and Analyzing the Bullwhip Effect in a Two-Product and Two Echelon Supply Chain Using Control Theory Approach

Coordination is very important in supply chain management and it is one of the main factors in supply chain profitability. Bullwhip effect is one of the basic obstacles to achieve coordination in supply chains and reduction of this phenomenon has an important role in supply chain harmony. The other side, costs of supply chain can be mitigated and customer service level can be increased by reduc...

A two-layered optimisation-based control strategy for multi-echelon supply chain networks

A new two-layered optimisation-based control approach is developed for multi-product, multi-echelon supply chain networks. The first layer employs simple feedback controllers to maintain inventory levels at all network nodes within pre-specified targets. The feedback controllers are embedded as equality constraints within an optimisation framework that incorporates model predictive control prin...

Pricing in a two-echelon supply chain with different market powers: game theory approaches

In this research, the optimal pricing decisions for two complementary products in a two-echelon supply chain under two scenarios are studied. The proposed supply chain in each echelon includes one retailer and two manufacturers and the same complementary products are produced. In the first scenario, we assume the unit manufacturing costs of the complementary products in each echelon are the sam...
